A big part of the development work that Give Us Wings does with our partner co-ops in Uganda is value addition. This means we identify areas where the group is already finding success and look for ways to amplify that success—helping the co-op improve production, increase quality, and raise more income. We’ve done this by providing processing machinery, purchasing new tools, helping with transportation issues, and connecting to training opportunities.
Earlier this year we were introduced to Edwin, a man from the capital city of Kampala who works for an organization that advises large-scale food producers. After learning about our work with agricultural co-ops and talking with our staff, Edwin graciously agreed to meet with a couple of the co-ops to evaluate their businesses and provide advice.
Edwin consulted on operations for the Buyemba (cassava flour and baked goods) and KOMCOS (peanut butter) co-ops and has been an amazingly helpful resource. He identified various areas of improvement and taught co-op members the principles of Good Manufacturing Practices. Feedback from the sessions was very positive, with co-ops excited to learn more about food safety and how to build their production capacity.
Huge thanks to Edwin and the friends who made this connection! It’s another step forward on our journey with these co-ops as they build solid, sustainable livelihoods.
