Miriam is a member of the Akimorisit community group, as well as the Buyemba Cooperative. Since 2019 she has been actively participating in all of Give Us Wings’ trainings and forums offered through our Economic Development program – learning about everything from kitchen gardening, good healthy eating habits, and effective business models.
We’ll let Miriam tell her story in her own words:
“I started as a farmer. I was growing vegetables. I planted eggplants. I sold them and used the money to plant cabbages. I sold the cabbages and used some of that money to pay for some school fees for my little children. Again, I planted tomatoes. That's where I got enough money to start my business of selling fresh fish. I used to pay to rent a scale to weigh the fish for my business, and it was a very tough problem for me. I struggled to save, but last month I bought a new scale. Now my business is going on well. Through that business, I can buy food and supplies for my family and pay school fees. Now I’m also rearing chickens, and I'm rearing pigs. The family, we are healthy. Thank you for helping us to fight poverty in this home. Long live Give Us Wings.”
