Immaculate
Immaculate’s decision to join her local cooperative was a pivotal one for her family. Among her peers in the Osia Cooperative, Immaculate found community, and received business training from our economic development program. And when Give Us Wings subsequently enrolled her in our tailoring training, things really began to change for her and her family.
In addition to sewing training, Give Us Wings provided Immaculate with everything she would need to start her own tailoring business including a sewing machine, fabric, thread, scissors, and more. She soon began to make beautiful dresses, shirts, and school uniforms to sell to people in the community. She used some of her profits to buy more fabric, enrolled in another training program, and now she teaches basic tailoring skills to community members … including her husband and daughter!
Her daughter shared, “Nowadays even when Mummy is sick or not around we do not go to sleep hungry because we have the skills to give us money.” Immaculate saved enough to buy a radio, a new sofa and chair which she had admired for a long time but could not afford. Additionally, profits from her tailoring business made it possible for her to open another business! She now also sells produce like tomatoes, eggs, onions, green pepper and cabbages. She uses profits from her produce business to buy additional food for her family, and she uses profits from her tailoring business to buy shares in the coop and to purchase other items for her business.
