Pipes, Pumps, and Progress: A New Water System

Thanks to the support of generous donors, construction has begun on the new water system for St. John’s Kayoro Health Center! The new well (called a borehole in Uganda) will save time and money at our clinic and will be an asset for the entire community.

A health clinic without reliable water is a clinic with increased risks to patients and staff. In Uganda, 25% of health care facilities lack basic water services, and one in five have no sanitation services at all (WaterAid “WASH in Healthcare Facilities” assessment in Uganda). These gaps dramatically raise the risk of infection, reduce the quality of care, and endanger both patients and frontline workers.

When we learned that the water well at our clinic was malfunctioning, we knew it was critical to get it working again. While the facility is connected to municipal water, it is costly and not always reliable. In addition to being more affordable, having a working borehole at our health center improves overall sanitation and patient care.

After a year of fundraising, an entirely new water system is now underway! A local contractor has been selected, drilling has begun, and the project should be completed by the end of summer 2025.

When completed, this project will provide:

  • A borehole in a new site with a reliable water table

  • A solar-powered pump that will eliminate the need for time-consuming manual pumping

  • A new piping system that will bring pumped water to all the buildings on the health center’s campus

  • A “community tap” where local residents can access FREE clean water

Thank you to our generous donors who helped make this project a reality. It will make a huge difference at the health center and will be an asset for the entire community. Be sure to follow us on social media for photo and video updates as the project begins!
