Expanding our Reach — Helping More Students

At Give Us Wings, we’re proud of the education that is being received by the young people in our Family to Family program. Years ago we decided to prioritize quality over quantity as we sent our sponsored students to a high-ranking boarding school. It was a more expensive proposition…but we are confident that the boarding schools we partner with provide students with excellent teachers, plenty of resources, regular and nutritious meals, and an atmosphere conducive to learning.

However, we’re now exploring ways to expand our educational program and do what we can to increase the quality of education for all students in Tororo district. This is a major goal for us in 2026. Here’s what we’ve accomplished so far:

  • On May 7, we held a Career Guidance activity for all the students in levels S4 and S6 at Mama Kevina secondary school…633 students in total. It was led by the Executive Director of a local nonprofit, who encouraged the young people to identify their strengths and pursue a career that will bring them fulfillment. The activity was very inspiring for students and their teachers, and we plan to do this on a regular basis at other schools in the district.

  • At our Annual Celebration in April, we raised funds to assist Akipenet Primary School, a new school in a very rural area of Tororo district that serves nearly 700 students. When our Executive Director visited the school in January, he was surprised to learn that almost all the classes were held outside under a grove of trees while they wait for the government to construct some sheltered classrooms! The school has limited resources and students have to share basic school supplies. But thanks to generous donors, Give Us Wings was able to provide 7 portable blackboards, 9 boxes of chalk, 10 teacher instruction manuals, and over 800 notebooks for the students!

We look forward to sharing more stories in the coming months as we discover other ways to help students in Tororo learn and thrive.
