A Clinic’s Impact

Give Us Wings Executive Director, Peter Carlson, recently returned from a week-long trip to Uganda where he met extensively with staff and community members. A priority was to better understand the impact our efforts are having in the Tororo district. To that end, he had a conversation with Winnie Akware, Health and Education Secretary for the district. She was very complimentary about the work being done at our St. John’s Kayoro Health Center:

  • “Your health workers are like brothers and sisters to us. They really care. The environment is pleasant and comfortable. At some other facilities you may not even get a chair to sit on while you wait!”

  • Winnie appreciates the outreach work done by our staff in the area of sexual health. Incidents of STDs have decreased among young adults in the area and there has been an increase in the use of birth control and family planning.

  • “We thank you for your positive approach for women who are pregnant. So many women are able to access pregnancy services for free or at a very affordable rate.”

  • Winnie says she sees more men at St. John’s Kayoro Health Center than at any other district clinic! Staff provides privacy and follows strict confidentiality. At some other clinics men sometimes fear that their illnesses or injuries will be known by others, causing embarrassment or ridicule. This is especially important for men living with HIV, a disease which she says is “killing our men silently.”

We are so pleased that St. John’s Kayoro Health Center is making such a tangible impact in the community.
