Jacinta

Jacinta’s story is one of heartbreak and determination. It’s also a story about Give Us Wings’ personal approach that we have with the members of the Tororo community.

Jacinta & Family - 2011

Jacinta married at a very young age. She shared, “I was not able to go to school, so I had to find a husband. I did not want to be a burden to my family. Then our youngest child died at age two in my arms and I got very sick.” It was shortly thereafter, in the early 2000’s, when Jacinta heard that a new organization called Give Us Wings was offering a sewing class in a small hut nearby. Her instructor recognized Jacinta’s talent right away, and GUW helped Jacinta think of ways she could earn an income using this new skill.

Jacinta also had some personal issues that necessitated counseling and support, so GUW provided access to those services, as well. She then went on to learn how to create unique art and beaded jewelry from pieces of colorful recycled paper. Jacinta is actively creating and selling her handiwork and is doing well!
