To make this vision a reality, she enlisted her mom and three school organizations. The Steppers dance troupe, the computer club, and a group called La Oportunidad agreed to help Paige organize "Change for Change," a fundraiser with a goal of raising $1,000 to purchase clothing, underwear, and shoes for 100 orphans.
The idea was to have students donate 35 cents a day for a month. If 100 students participated, the project would meet its goal.
La Oportunidad helped put together brochures and a video to explain the fundraiser. Students showed the video in Social Studies classes, and collected money daily during lunch. They also read facts about poverty in Uganda to classes each day. The Student Council was also involved as students ran the entire fundraiser with guidance from Paige.
Local businesses donated prizes for students who contributed, including a color TV.
The fundraiser exceeded the $1,000 goal, and at a very emotional all-school assembly, Paige presentednot $1,000but $1,807 to Give Us Wings Director Mary Steiner Whelan for orphans in Uganda.
"Just think of how many Paiges are out there wanting an adult to give them a 'go-for-it' nudge," says Sara Boulger Paige's mom.
"If you reach out and help to start a project, fundraiser, or drive, the impact will affect the lives of so many," and she adds,
"Trust me. You will never be the same."
